What was the difference between Nephi and Laman and Lemuel?

Thomas R. Valletta

In Nephi’s impressive contrast set throughout 1 Nephi 2, we clearly see what led Laman and Lemuel to rebellion and Nephi to obedience. It was a matter of the heart. Verses 16–18 give a key to understanding some of the differences between Nephi and his older brothers: “Nephi sought the Lord early and earnestly and found him; Laman and Lemuel would not so much as begin the spiritual odyssey (see 1 Nephi 15:8–9). Nephi could view things (good and bad, blessings and trials) from an elevated perspective; Laman and Lemuel continued to refuse the vantage of higher ground” (McConkie and Millet, Doctrinal Commentary, 1:34).
