What is the significance of the two families joining together?

Thomas R. Valletta

In 2 Chronicles 15:8–9 we learn that people from the tribes of Ephraim, Manasseh, and Simeon migrated to the kingdom of Judah before the kingdom of Israel was conquered by the Assyrians. Lehi was of the tribe of Manasseh (see Alma 10:3). Elder Erastus Snow noted, “The Prophet Joseph Smith informed us that … Ishmael was of the lineage of Ephraim” (in Journal of Discourses, 23:184). About 1900 B.C. Jacob blessed Ephraim and Manasseh, Joseph’s sons, saying, “Let my name be named on them … and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth” (Genesis 48:16). Jacob foresaw that descendants of Ephraim and Manasseh would be scattered throughout the world (see Genesis 48–49).
