Continually receiving the wrath of his brothers, he was bound for four days on the boat coming to the promised land. … Although the purpose of the suffering is not always apparent at the time, the Prophet Joseph had a singularly spiritual experience as he lingered in Liberty Jail. The Lord comforted him: ‘My son, peace be unto thy soul; thine adversity and thine afflictions shall be but a small moment; And then, if thou endure it well, God shall exalt thee on high; thou shalt triumph over all thy foes’ [D&C 121:7–8]” (Edwards, “That They Might Know Thee,” 66).
