Interestingly, the common practice in early America was for the first son to be named after the father, but the first two sons born to Joseph Sr.nd Lucy Mack Smith were Alvin and Hyrum, reserving the name Joseph for the third son, thus unknowingly fulfilling an ancient prophecy” (Ogden and Skinner, Book of Mormon, 1:130).
