“A Marvelous Work Among Them”

Joseph F. McConkie, Robert L. Millet

Nephi prophesied that when the “great and marvelous work” of restoration, foretold by Isaiah, was about to begin with the coming forth of the Book of Mormon, many would reject it and give the argument that they already had a Bible and had no need for another. The statement is its own refutation.

The philosopher argues that there can be no absolutes, not realizing that such a pronouncement constitutes an absolute. The false religionist argues that the Bible contains all revelation, not realizing that since the Bible makes no such a claim for itself, the only way they could know this would be by revelation. Thus men and women find themselves in the awkward position of claiming a revelation to say that there is no revelation. Such is the confusion of which the kingdom of darkness is made.
