Could God actually cease to be God?

Thomas R. Valletta

Alma knew eternal laws could not be violated and he was teaching this doctrine to Corianton. In an effort to teach his son, Alma used rhetorical questions to make his point. Alma highlights the doctrines of mercy and justice by asking Corianton the impossible: “What, do ye suppose that mercy can rob justice?” He adds emphasis to the impossible by stating: “If so, God would cease to be God.” Alma is not wondering or actually suggesting that God would cease to be God. Rather, Alma knew as did Moroni, that “God … [is] an unchangeable Being … [and] he changeth not” (Mormon 9:19). How does knowing God will never change or cease to be, increase your faith in Him?
