How do fasting and prayer show our gratitude to God?

Thomas R. Valletta

President Gordon B. Hinckley illustrated that gratitude can be expressed with fasting. He read a letter written by a woman who said, “Most of my fasts are ‘thankful’ fasts” (“Save the Children,” 54).

Elder Russell M. Nelson spoke similarly of prayer: “I did not fully appreciate the significance of prayerful greetings until I became a father. … Now I sense how our Heavenly Father may appreciate our prayers, morning and night. But I can imagine the pangs of his sorrow because of silence from any of his children. To me, such ingratitude seems comparable to sullen goldfish oblivious to kind providers who sprinkle food in their bowl” (“Joy Cometh in the Morning,” 69).
