Why does it often take extremes, such as a famine, to convince people to repent?

Thomas R. Valletta

“Famine often had a humbling effect on the people. As the saying goes, ‘a hungry stomach has a way of loosening up a stiff neck’” (Ogden and Skinner, Book of Mormon, 2:99). Incredibly, it took the Nephites more than two years to finally see the connection between their wickedness and the famine. Even then they had to plead with their leaders to ask Nephi for relief. In your opinion, would it take this length of time for our modern society to be humbled?
