What can we learn from Nephi’s repetition of “O Lord” in his prayer?

Thomas R. Valletta

“According to Robert Alter, repetition of a word or phrase is one of the most common literary devices used in the narrative of the Bible. … Martin Buber noted this stylistic element and called it Leitworter, a German word meaning ‘leading words,’ ‘guide words,’ or ‘theme words.’ … Repetition of the phrase O Lord [in Helaman 11:4, 10–16] reminds the reader that Nephi is praying to the Lord, even pleading with him for his people” (Anderson, “Leitworter in Helaman and 3 Nephi,” 241–44; emphasis added).
